The sermon, “Intentional Discipleship,” delivered by Pastor Mark Ellison, underscored the significance of personal spiritual revival and how it’s prerequisite to a larger church-wide revival. Ellison drew from Matthew 9:35-38 to underscore the responsibility we each carry to respond to God’s call, and also to pray for others to hear and heed this call. The sermon then explored the concept of intentional discipleship, wherein Ellison delineated the proactive aspects of our faith. He stated that it is about making a committed effort to influence others positively with teachings of Christ, and help them grow in their relationship with Him. Referencing the teachings from Colossians 1:24-29, he emphasized how personal growth and one’s responses to difficult circumstances influence others, encouraging the congregation to share their growth stories and the comfort they received from God.Shifting focus to the theme of God’s call for discipleship, Ellison argued that it is an invitation we all receive, regardless of our cultural or religious backgrounds. Discipleship, he mentioned, is about hearing and responding to God’s call with a willing heart, serving not just as listeners, but active messengers of the gospel. In the sermon’s final act, Ellison discussed immersive discipleship. He explained that it calls for an active, intentional involvement in the spiritual growth of others. He challenged the congregation to renew their commitment to discipleship, encouraging those who haven’t accepted Christ to seek answers, and those already on the path to ask how they could further their intentional discipleship. Ultimately, the sermon commended the congregation to not merely receive but also internalize, embody and propagate the teachings of Christ.
